Clinical Application of Positive Airway Pressure Therapy in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome
Yun Chang-Ho

Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common condition causing significant daytime dysfunction and increasing risk of cardiovascular and metabolic co-morbidities. Therefore it should be treated, completely or at least sufficiently. Positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy most efficiently eliminates obstructive sleep-disordered breathing, functioning as a pneumatic splint and consequently preventing desaturation and sleep fragmentation. To achieve the goal of PAP therapy to reverse or prevent OSAS-related adverse events, PAP titration is mandatory. PAP titration is the process to define the ideal PAP level, i.e. the lowest pressure that sufficiently abolishes obstructive respiratory events. PAP titration is the fundamental for successful PAP treatment in OSAS. Therefore, it should be done in the adequate and standard manner. ¤·
